500 Words a Week - This Is What Hard Feels Like
A podcast I enjoyed this week was Alex Hormozi on Chris Williamson’s Modern Wisdom. My favourite part of the podcast and something that stuck with me throughout the week is the concept Alex and Chris talked about referring to the title: “This is what hard feels like.” Summarized in the following tweet from Alex:
I’m not really trying to build a business, as with many of us reading this. I’m trying to sort my life out, trying to figure what the next 1, 5, and 10 years look like, and trying to become a better person in the process. At times, like the tweet above, this feels shitty. I feel I’m getting nowhere. Wading through knee deep muck, where each step feels like a lifetime and it’s a fight just to keep your shoes on. However, hearing the above was reassuring. Everyone knows the saying “if it was easy, everyone would do it”. What you’re trying to do is hard. Whatever it is. Even if it’s only trying to get through the day, at times that can be hard. Hard feels shitty. This is the point where most people stop, because of this feeling. If you can just keep going, that little bit further, you might feel the ground beneath your feet begin to harden. The muck that was slowing you down, start to lessen and gradually start to become firm ground.
For me, I feel like I’ve been having more of these moments. Maybe it’s then trying to recognize when you are becoming too accustomed to these shitty feelings. Something that Chris warns us about in relation to above, is that we can become good at suffering. We can begin to take on more and more, causing us to feel and output less and less. The art of burnout is something we must learn to feel. Learn to feel when it’s time to take the foot off the pedal. Time to decompress, switch off and think about nothing.
